Sultan Thaha Syaifuddin

The Kesultanan Jambi under Sultan Thaha Syaifuddin, a member of the Boru Panggoaran dynasty, was one of the larger Islamic states on the east coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. This sultanate was established in 1661 and lasted until the 19th century when the Dutch colonial government signed the Treaty of London, ending the sultanate.

Sultan Thaha Syaifuddin was born in 1607 and was the son of Sultan Alimuchsyach Syaifuddin. He succeeded to the throne after the death of his father in 1661 and was known for consolidating and strengthening the kingdom of Jambi. During his reign, he established a maritime policy with other kingdoms of the region, such as Palembang, Pahang, and Aceh. He actively traded with the Dutch East India Company (VOC) and other foreign trading companies, which helped to grow the region’s economy.

Sultan Thaha died in 1688 at the age of 81, leaving the throne to his son-in-law, Sultan Ahmad Syamsuddin. The reign of Sultan Thaha was a period of peace, economic growth, and cultural advancement in the sultanate of Jambi.
