Masjid Al Ikhsaniyyah Jambi

 Masjid Al Ikhsaniyyah Jambi is a historic mosque located in Jambi, Sumatra, Indonesia. Built in 1630 by the Sultanate of Jambi, the mosque is considered to be one of the oldest and most important Islamic religious sites in the region.


Having been built in the early 17th century, Masjid Al Ikhsaniyyah pays homage to a period in time when Islam and Javanese culture filtered through Jambi. Reflective of its origin story, the mosque is an architectural mashup of Javanese, Malay and Chinese influences. Constructed by the first Sultan of Jambi, Syaifu Az-Zahr, Masjid Al Ikhsaniyyah is located in a residential area on the banks of the Sungai Jambi river.

The mosque is a well-known landmark and a spiritual center in the city and has been a major religious site for Muslims from the surrounding area since its creation. Though the mosque has withstood the test of time and still retains its original essence, restoration and renovation to ensure its upkeep have been undertaken since its creation.

Built on top of a hill, the internal courtyard (Sahn) of the mosque is surrounded by a perimeter of arches and grand arches, with five sections of the mosque cascading down to its entrance. The main prayer hall features an impressive mihrab (prayer niche) and a marble pulpit (minbar). The roof has several of its own unique characteristics and features, including wooden ribbed panels, skylights and four large central dome surrounded by four smaller domes.

Masjid Al Ikhsaniyyah is also a mainstay of culture in Jambi, and hosts weekly events and special exhibitions, as well as annual religious celebrations. Masjid Al Ikhsaniyyah is open to visitors from all faiths and backgrounds, and is an important landmark of Jambi’s Islamic history.
