Candi Muaro Jambi is a Buddhist temple complex located in central part of Jambi Province, Indonesia. It is the center of testimony and confirmation of Jambi kingdom’s spiritual and cultural development during the 7th to 13th centuries AD.
This temple complex is thought to have been built by the Srivijayan Maharaja named Sanjaya. It is believed to have been sacred because it was a place of worship to the god Shiva. The main religious area of the temple complex is surrounded by several stupas and several other smaller temples in the form of temples for Buddhism.
The ruins of this temple complex have been studied and documented for over three decades. This has helped to uncover the many aspects of the complex including its layout and its religious practices.
The most distinguishing feature of this temple is its symmetry. It is comprised of parts that extend outward from the main religious area which are divided by four gateways. These gateways lead to four different directions which are numbered one to four from the main religious area and imply a directional orientation for the temple complex.
The temple complex is also surrounded by several ponds, reflecting pools, and water channels which differentiate the complex from other temples in central Indonesia.
The statues, spiritual images, and artifact collections found at the temple complex are quite extensive and have been the source of great research and documentation by researchers in the fields of archaeology, art history, anthropology, and religion for many years.
Aside from the temples, the area has also been home to many other monuments and structures related to Jambi kingdom over the centuries. These include pavilions, gates, walls, and an Elephant Conservation Park.
Candi Muaro Jambi is a significant cultural and religious site in Indonesia. It is thought to have been a major part of the history, thought, and religion of the Jambi kingdom and is considered to be a part of the national heritage of Indonesia.
