The Legend of the Mouse Deer and the Lion

Kancil dan Singa is a popular Malay folktale about a clever little mousedeer named Kancil who outwitted a lion, Singa. The story begins with Kancil, a small but brave mousedeer, who lives in a forest and loves to play pranks on other animals. One day, Kancil decides to play a prank on Singa, the lion king of the forest. Kancil tells Singa that he knows where to find a tasty meal. Singa is intrigued and follows Kancil, who leads him to a deep hole. Kancil tells Singa to jump in the hole and catch the meal himself. Singa, being the proud lion he is, jumps in the hole and gets stuck. Kancil then laughs and tells Singa that the meal he was looking for was actually his own tail! Kancil, being the clever mousedeer he is, has outwitted Singa and escaped danger. This folktale is a popular Malay story with a moral about the power of intelligence and wisdom over strength and power. This story is still popular in Malaysia today and is used to teach children the importance of being clever and using their wits to get out of difficult situations. It is also a reminder to adults about the importance of humility and how even the mightiest of creatures can be outwitted.
